Music in a world with the illusion of product differentiation
Composing music is not difficult for some people. Even those that suffer from writer’s block suffer more often from the need to be prolific. Writing lyrics is even easier for many of those working today. What is difficult is offering something to the world that is truly unique.
Nice Monster (J. Matthew Gerken’s main creative musical outlet) attempts to create catchy, melodic music while strenously avoidng rhythmic cliche. You are not going to hear rock guitar strum or many straight back beats. That is not to say that it is not dancable or that it does not have a strong and contagious beat. The music in fact does. Only that the meter will be unusual to most people (hopefully without really noticing it) and the phrasing will be painstakingly assembled so that Matthew Gerken does not get bored. Hopefully you feel the same way.
